Passenger statistics recently released by the Office of Rail and Road showed that all regions in the United Kingdom experienced an increase in train journeys last year.
Between April 2014 and March 2015, the total number of passenger journeys increased by 4.5 per cent as compared to previous years, totalling 1.393 billion journeys.
And the total number of rail passenger journeys have doubled within just twenty years, according to previous data.
Where is everyone going?
The most-travelled-to region within this time period was… you guessed it… London. Would it surprise you that people travelled by train more regularly within London as compared to the number of people taking trips to or from the area?
Other popular destinations (or places to depart) were the South East, East England, North West and West Midlands, respectively.
Travelling near or far?
The total number of passenger journeys between regions was about 908 million, as opposed to 939 million times passengers travelled within a region.
There was more travel to or from the North East, East Midlands, East of England, and South East, as compared to the number of passengers travelling by train within those regions.
Overall, the total number of journeys to or from regions increased by 4.3 per cent, and journeys within regions increased by 4.6 per cent.
Passenger satisfaction
The percentage of passengers who are satisfied with their rail journeys has also increased as of recent, according to Transport Focus.
In the bi-annual survey, 83 per cent of passengers said they were satisfied with their rail journey in autumn of 2015.
