Our next instalment of our mission to discover the wonders of smaller towns and cities across the UK, steams onwards to the heart of Scotland. Stirling is steeped in the history of fallen kings, queens and national heroes, all of which Stirling exhibits perfectly, whether it be a monument atop a mound, or a royal castle shining over a city.
Stirling is, however, not just for the history buffs amongst us. Its vibrant student scene brings an array of high profile artists, comedians and theatre productions to the already popular city. The bustling city centre has no shortage of high street shops, busy cafés and welcoming pubs.

Population: 45,750, with 11,500 students attending the University of Stirling during term-time
By train: Stirling Railway Station is situated on the East Coast Main Line, and therefore has regular services to Edinburgh Waverly, Newcastle, York and London Kings Cross. ScotRail also run services to major Scottish cities including Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness.
Things to do: Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park is only 30 minutes from the city centre of Stirling, so the city is the ideal base to explore the park and all the outdoor activities it has to offer.
Popular tourist spots: With stunning views across the city, the national landmark that is The National Wallace Monument, celebrates the life of a Scottish hero and his historic battles over the lands below the monument. When you reach The Crown at the top of The Monument the view will take your breath away.
The views at its peak are one the finest in Scotland, from Ben Lomond and The Trossachs in the West, and through The Forth Valley past the city of Stirling and The Ochil Hills to The Pentland Hills in the East.
