If you gaze into the town from the racecourse, you can see the Beacon, the vertical pier, rising above the town, which is only four stories high but that does not matter in a town where few of the buildings are greater than two. Race meetings at Redcar take place in the afternoons, or occasionally the evenings, and I would recommend arriving early and having a look around the town beforehand.
I recently visited with Cole Robinson of Filmit, who grew up in Redcar and has always wanted to make a video of the town.
We explored the seafront, although the Beacon was closed, and enjoyed a lemon top ice cream at Pacitto’s who have cafes both on the seafront and on the High Street, which runs parallel to the Esplanade one street back. We found the world’s oldest surviving lifeboat, the Zetland, delivered to Redcar in 1802, which is the only one left of 31 unsinkables built by Henry Greathead.
If there’s no racing on when you wish to visit, Redcar can be paired with a visit to the Victorian resort of Saltburn by the Sea, six miles further east at the end of the line. Break of journey is permitted with virtually all tickets.
