Regular train users will be all too familiar with the struggles of trying to haul your luggage on the train. In a standard train carriage, there is only one luggage rack to store large suitcases, with the rest expected to be stashed overhead or underneath your seat. With that in mind, we felt we should advise you on the many luggage options available that will make travelling by rail easier.
Small Wheeled Suitcases
A small wheeled suitcase is absolutely ideal for a rail journey. Think of something around cabin bag size – that way your suitcase will have multiple uses! The key to buying a suitcase for rail travel is “the lighter the better”, so you can definitely lift it into the overhead storage when it’s full of your belongings. It is also important to consider the depth of your suitcase. Overhead compartments only have a limited amount of space, and you need to be sure your case will fit securely.
With the security of your case in mind, generally speaking a soft suitcase or holdall is easier to store in the overhead compartments, as they will manipulate themselves to the shape of the storage area. If you do need to opt for larger luggage, there is generally a larger luggage storage area at the end of every carriage, with some larger train firms offering an “extra luggage space”, for those who have two or more large suitcases, though of course you leave them unattended at your own risk. If you’re going on a long journey, interrailing perhaps, it seems obvious that you would need a large backpack. Afterall, you are going backpacking. Just heaving a backpack onto your back is hard work in itself, but when you consider lifting it into an overhead compartment – does that bear thinking about? Moreover, backpacks are made of soft fabric and while it has been proven easier to store soft shell suitcases and backpacks, it does mean that your belongings are more susceptible to damage.
A backpack is the perfect choice for hand luggage. They can easily be stashed under a seat, or kept on your knee and you can be hands free to handle your suitcase through the station and on the train. It also means that all of the weight you are carrying is distributed evenly across your hips, back and shoulders. Be sure to pack all of your valuables in your hand luggage, to be sure that you have them secure in the event that you are separated from your suitcase.
