The UK capitals are often the hot spots for family holidays. We like to bring attention to the cities that often don’t get the attention they deserve with our series #offthebeatentrack. In this feature, we’re heading to the Midlands into Sheffield. We’ve found some great, family-friendly activities that you can enjoy any time of year.
The Botanical Gardens
When it’s time to escape the busy city life, this is the best place to unwind. The Botanical Gardens are a great place for the whole family and are great to visit in any season. As the summer is fast-approaching, the bright colours from the flowers will be starting to bud, so don’t miss the chance to witness it all! Once you’ve had a walk around the gardens, head to the cafe for something to eat and drink.
Tropical Butterfly House and Wildlife and Falconry Centre
Ever held a lizard before? Well, at the Wildlife and Falconry Centre you can do just that. You can also hold the snakes and visit the alligator! Watch the bird shows – the parrot shows, in particular, are amazing. The featured butterflies are native to Costa Rica and the Philippines so expect to see a wild range of colours. General admission to the park is £11 for adults, £10 for children and under 2s go free! Make sure to book your tickets in advance.
Millennium Gallery
Here, the exhibitions are constantly changing. Throughout the month of May, you’ll be able to see the Ruskin Collection by John Ruskin. This writer travelled the world and wrote about his experiences. These excerpts are featured in this exhibition. The Protest Lab will be open on selected days so make sure to check for those – this is a space for people to share their views and challenge ideas. If you want to check out the crafts club, visit the gallery on a Monday!
Don’t wait – book your tickets to Sheffield today and start enjoying a great day out, or weekend with family or friends! Cheap train tickets to Sheffield (SHF) are available at www.nationalrail.com.
