Ask anyone who has ever needed to consider travelling by rail, and they will tell you they would love to save money on train tickets. Well, there’s at least one excellent way to make train travel cheaper: by purchasing National Rail Off-Peak tickets.
What are National Rail Off-Peak tickets?
In a way, the Off-Peak tickets offered by National Rail explain themselves. They’re cheaper tickets for travel during quieter, “off-peak” times.
Specifically, National Rail Off-Peak tickets and Super Off-Peak tickets apply to less busy times on weekdays. Not only this, but they’re also available for travel at any time on a weekend.
You might be thinking: if these rail tickets are cheaper, there’s surely a catch? Well, yes: they often require you to travel at particular times, or on specified days or routes.
So, if you require a high level of flexibility, these tickets might not be the answer to your needs. Otherwise, they can be an excellent way of saving money on rail travel.
The difference between Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets
You might find that for a specific journey you wish to make, multiple Off-Peak fares are available. In this situation, it will be the cheaper fare, subject to more restrictions, that is the “Super Off-Peak” fare.
Whether you opt for the Super Off-Peak fare for your journey, or another Off-Peak fare, the ticket will only be valid for the specific date stated on the ticket.
How can you save even more money with National Rail Off-Peak tickets?
There are various proven ways to get the most out of these attractively priced tickets. Firstly, make sure you travel at times when Off-Peak fares are actually available.
Remember: it is the less busy, off-peak hours when these tickets are valid. Off-peak hours typically begin at 9:30am from Monday to Friday in large cities and towns. Everywhere else, off-peak hours tend to start at 09:00am on weekdays. Weekends and bank holidays are a different situation: on such days, Off-Peak fares apply all day.
You can also combine these tickets with Railcards for even bigger discounts. If you’re eligible, get a National Railcard to unlock savings of a third on Standard Class Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak fares. A 16-17 Saver Railcard, meanwhile, can bring even heftier discounts of 50% across adult Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets.
It can be well worth considering split ticketing, too. As we have written about in the past here at NationalRail.com, purchasing separate tickets for different legs of your journey could work out cheaper than buying one ticket for the entire trip. This is known as “split ticketing”.
Finally, purchase in advance if you can. If you tend to make very spontaneous travel decisions, it’s worth bearing in mind that you can usually purchase Off-Peak tickets as late as 10 minutes prior to departure. Booking early, though, which you can do as far as 12 weeks before your trip, could enable you to save big. This can be particularly the case when it comes to long-distance journeys.
Whenever you do book your National Rail Off-Peak tickets, make sure you do it with National Rail. We would be delighted to help you access the best possible weekly train price for your favoured route.
