Indoor winter activities in the UK

indoor-ski-centreMost people are under the impression that you need to travel abroad for winter holidays to find mountains of snow and ice. But that is no longer true. There are locations all around the UK that offer skiing and snowboarding lessons and sessions for anyone from beginners to experts who would like to try their hand at winter sports.

Indoor snow centres are actually located around the UK! There are also pop-up ice rinks during the winter season, especially over the Christmas period.

Sunderland Snowsports Centre

Your skiing or snowboarding expertise won’t matter here, as the different slope heights make this centre suitable for all abilities. The main slope peaks at 165 metres – more than double the height of the nursery slope (65m).

The slopes are open during most working hours but are then closed during private club session between 19:00 and 21:00 on select days. The centre is open every weekend from 10am – 5pm.

Getting there: Sunderland Snowsports Centre is only a couple of miles away from the Sunderland train station.

Ski and Snowboard Centre, Cardiff

Don’t worry if you don’t have professional skiing equipment because it’s available for hire at Cardiff’s Ski and Snowboard Centre! This dry slope’s tallest drop is 100 metres high and also features a Poma lift to get you to the top.

The centre is open to the public on Tuesday & Thursday, and Saturday & Sunday. Although there are lessons available for beginners, it shouldn’t stop the more seasoned skiers and snowboarders hitting the slope.

Getting there: Fairwater train station is only half a mile away.

Firpark Ski Centre, Tillicoultry

This Scottish skiing centre is open all year round except for main public holidays. There are experienced instructors available for those who require expert instruction, and want a go on the 120-metre high slope!

If you’re an avid skier and your blades are a little bit tired, you can repair them on-site and start shooting down the slopes when they’re ready! If you’d like to get here, hop off the train at Alloa train station!
