A classic station, designed by John Dobson, Newcastle Central is heralded as one of the nation’s most iconic train stations. Boasting a 600-feet long street facade, Newcastle Central is best known for keeping the North East connected to the rest of the country, and beyond.
Carlisle Citadel, Cumbria
This train station is certainly majestic from the outside. Not only is the Citadel built using local red sandstone, it also boasts a five-bay, buttressed porte-cochere and is complimented by an ecclesiastical clock tower.
Edinburgh Waverley, Scotland
As the second largest station in Britain, Edinburgh Waverley just had to make this list of iconic train stations. The station is named after Sir Walter Scott’s first novel and is hailed for its beautiful Victoran glass canopy over the waiting room.
Birmingham New Street, Birmingham
Even before the huge expansion that this station saw in 2015, Birmingham New Street has always deserved the label “iconic”. The station has served as one of the very first links between the West Coast and London upon its opening, and is currently known for its extensive collection of shops and restaurants.
Cardiff Central, Cardiff
As the busiest station in Wales, Cardiff Central has certainly earned its place on this list of iconic train stations. Originally, the station was built to divert the station away from the River Taff, but these days it serves as a major link between South and West Wales, as well as the rest of the UK.
Ribblehead Station, North Yorkshire
While this station might not have the best facilities, compared to others on this list, the view it offers from the platform is incomparable. Visit the station and head to the visitor centre to get an understanding of the region’s rich history.
Kings Cross Station
Of course, we couldn’t compile a list of the most iconic train stations in the UK without mentioning Kings Cross! Aside from being possibly the most well known train station the UK has to offer, it now has a host of modern facilities and is a prime example of historic architecture coupled with contemporary engineering.
Stratford International, London
The busiest train station in the UK, according to Statista, absolutely had to make our list. Equipped with all of the train station essentials, Stratford International is renowned for having the most footfall with 14million people entering and exiting the station in a 12 month period.
Cromford Station, Derbyshire
Cromford is considered one of England’s most photogenic train stations, earning it a place on the list of iconic locations. The station itself resembles a French chateau, and is thought to have been designed as such to impress important visitors to Willersley Castle.
