Five reasons why public transport is better for the environment

19 May 2022

With climate change being one of the biggest challenges this planet is facing, it’s more important than ever that every one of us makes a conscious effort to do what they can for the environment. Here are five reasons why public transport is better for the environment and why you should make the switch.

  • Public transport reduces less emissions than cars

One of the best ways to reduce emissions is to make better use of our public transportation systems. Research has shown that a number of cities has managed to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions by up to 50% by limiting the number of cars on the road.

It’s true that emissions caused by planes and large commercial vehicles make up the majority of co2 emissions, but that doesn’t mean the gas released from cars should be ignored.

  • Clear air leads to better health

Not only do greenhouse gas emissions harm wildlife in areas, but they can also have harmful effects on human health, too. When air quality is compromised, harmful particles are emitted which can increase the risk of respiratory diseases, particularly amongst children who are more vulnerable to negative environmental effects than adults are.

  • Congestion is a real issue

Let’s face it, there’s only so much space on a single road and with families owning upwards of two cars nowadays, congestion is becoming more and more of an issue. Although diverting traffic and coming up with other tactics to counter the effects of congestion go some way towards helping with the negative effects, the real issue still remains.

By making use of public transportation services and ensuring you book train tickets with national rail  you’ll be sure to get to work on time. No more traffic excuses for you!

  • Road safety concerns

With an increased number of cars in busy city centres, space for pedestrians and cyclists is becoming smaller and smaller. The main issue with this is that spaces are becoming too dangerous for those pedestrians or cyclists to inhabit.

By adopting the use of public transport however, there would be more free space in urban areas, reducing levels of traffic and making areas more safe and accessible and cyclists and pedestrians, not to mention the addition of a more peaceful area for all.

  • Save time and money

Using public transport is both cheaper and quicker as a result of vehicle congestion and the creation of bus lanes, for example. As if this isn’t beneficial enough, you don’t need to concern yourself with finding a parking space or worry about how expensive it will be when you travel on public transport.

Public transport is becoming more popular as fuel prices and commuting time increase. Commuters can spend their commuting time in a more productive way by answering emails, reading a book or even catching up on some much-needed rest – something they definitely can’t do if they’re driving. So, are you ready to make the switch and do your part for the environment?
