Ok, this has very little to do with UK rail news – and we advise taking the story with a large pinch of salt, given that it originated from China’s own state media – but it has emerged that the country is considering installing a railway underneath Mount Everest, to serve as a direct link with Nepal.
It would represent an engineering project on an almost unprecedented scale, with spokespeople claiming the tunnel would be completed by 2020.
It has to be noted that this wouldn’t be the first time China has claimed to be considering ambitious rail projects. In 2014, state-run newspaper the Beijing Times claimed that a railway to connect China with the US – over 8,000 miles long and including 125 miles of undersea tunnel – was also being looked at.
