As Valentine’s Day draws closer, it’s time for couples to soak up the atmosphere of the most romantic date in the calendar. Many of us are aware of romantic destinations worldwide including Paris, Rome and New York. However, what about here in Britain?
Lake District
The Lake District is stunning all year round, but is particularly romantic on Valentine’s Day, when the winter sunset reflects off the magnificent lakes. Maybe one to avoid if it’s a night out on the town you’re after, but for a quieter, romantic Valentines retreat, the Lakes are heard to beat. Taking the train to Oxenholme will leave you on the edge of Kendal, from which you can get the train to Windermere, and you can plan the rest of your relaxing break from there.
Cornwall
With scenic harbours and bays littered across the South West County, it comes with no surprise Cornwall makes our list. From cosy retreats to breath-taking walks along the coastline, Cornwall offers an abundance of romantic adventures.
Penzance serves as a fantastic base for your onward journey, with frequent trains from Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Scotland.
London
London is a huge, bustling, crowded metropolis, but there are limitless opportunities for romance. Couples can enjoy the romantic views of London’s famous landmarks with a champagne cruise down the River Thames, or take love to new heights with a private capsule on the London Eye.
London stands at the very heart of the National Rail network, with trains to all major UK cities as well as international destinations including Paris, Lille and Brussels.
Stratford upon Avon
Spending your romantic weekend in Stratford upon Avon, can feel like something out of a fairy-tale, or perhaps Romeo and Juliet (hopefully with a better outcome!) The beautifully calm River Avon can be your focal point – with a candlelit dinner in the rooftop restaurant at the RSC – or try the town centre’s Butterfly Farm for a slightly different experience.
Stratford upon Avon has frequent trains to both Birmingham Snow Hill and Royal Leamington Spa Stations, which are both well connected to the National Rail network.
Edinburgh
Whether it be a stroll up the Royal Mile to the castle, whilst periodically halting your journey for a taste of Scotland’s finest whisky, to the modern bars and restaurants on George Street, Edinburgh can accommodate for everyone’s taste, so let the character of this fine city whisk you away in a romantic trance with your partner.
Edinburgh has two main railway stations, Waverley and Haymarket, both of which are served well by trains from Scotland and England. With Waverley being a main station on the East Coast Main Line, Edinburgh is the perfect quick romantic getaway.
